1st Grade

First Grade Newsletter
January 31 - February 3

Subject Highlights
Phonics: Vowel patterns, the ea digraph, and the "dropping rule" (drop the silent e of a root word before adding a vowel suffix)

Math: We will explore weight and capacity this week.

History: We are eagerly learning about the diets of northwest Native Americans and their hunting/gathering practices. On Wednesday, Feb 8th at 2:50 we will be sampling huckleberries and buffalo meat as two examples. Lori Davey has offered to supply our berries. I would appreciate donations of cooked and crumbled ground bison meat for the occasion. We would also be interested in cooked or dried game meat such as elk, venison, or turkey.
Let me know if you can help.

Spelling: Test is on Thursday this week.

Science: Read and do pages 136-139. Mrs. Revels would also like students to practice with the vocabulary cards that can be cut out of the book. Due Thursday.

Classroom and School Notes
Reading Logs are due tomorrow. Don't forget to also log those minutes on the Reading is the Ticket forms.

Our field trip is this Friday. Watch for an email from me about student attire. Please have your form turned in by Wednesday so we can finalize arrangements. So far, we have drivers for half of our class. Also, PLEASE LEAVE YOUR CHILD'S BOOSTER SEAT on the ground under his/her hook in the hallway that morning if one is required. We should be back to school by around 1:30 for a few lessons and to wrap up the week. Dismissal will be at the usual time.

Speech Meet is a little over a week away! Please help your child prepare and fine tune his or her speech in the ways that Mrs. Clemons has suggested in her communications.

Wishing you a blessed week!

Making Math Lessons as Easy as 1, Pause, 2, Pause ...

Students learning Singapore math, like these fourth graders at Quaker Ridge School in Scarsdale, N.Y., use many hands-on and visual aids.
