Classroom Volunteer Guidelines

Thank you for Helping!

•We require all people to sign in at the office before entering the classroom and sign out before you leave the building. If you need to move somewhere other than where you are signed in to please come back to the office and indicate such on the sign-in sheet. You will need to wear a nametag while on the premises, these are hanging by the sign-in sheets. We need to maintain accurate accountability of all people in the building during the school day. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

•Thank you for letting the teacher know what days and times you will be consistently available. They need to know in order to best utilize you while you are here. For school purposes, please have the children call you Mrs., Mr., Miss, or Ms.

•Volunteers are respectfully asked to maintain a professional attitude concerning discussion of individual students outside the classroom.

•If your child’s behavior changes in any way during your time in the classroom you will be asked to volunteer in other ways outside the classroom.

•Please be punctual, as you will be depended on for the specific time you have signed up for.

•If you know you will be gone, please contact the teacher or office as soon as possible. The people you assist have likely made plans that include you and will need to revise them. The LAM Office number is 765-8238.

•Please do not bring preschoolers or siblings when you volunteer. The teacher may make exceptions.

•Allow the teacher to discipline children. If there are incidents of misbehavior, it is the teacher’s job to deal with them. Volunteers may gently redirect behavior in accordance with posted rules.

•Feel free to let the teacher know where you excel (telling stories, math, science, singing, playing instruments, handcrafts, computer use, photography, etc.). Teachers love to use volunteers when their expertise enhances the curriculum.

•If you are going to be a regular volunteer, we will ask you to be background checked. You cannot, by law, be unsupervised with the children even momentarily without this step.

•Unless you have been background checked, you need to use the church bathroom across the parking lot while children are in the school.

•Out of respect for others, please restrict cell phone use to emergencies and excuse yourself from the room.
Effective Ways to Work With Children:

•When working with children, encourage them to do their own thinking. Give them plenty of time to answer; silence often means they are thinking and organizing what they want to say or write.

•Help students to tackle their work, but do not do their work for them. If they get off-track, help them get back on track in a tactful manner.

•Maintain a sense of humor!

Thank You!

Thank you for putting time and energy into God’s children’s education. Volunteers truly help the school run effectively and efficiently. Together we can make each child’s year a success.

Yes, I am eager to volunteer! I understand the above guidelines and will follow them.
